DESCRIPTION: MENU AND COOKING
COMPETITIONS The bilingual students of the 2nd year of ESO are going to enjoy a lesson that involves blended learning, that is, students will have to work both in the classroom and at home. Session 1 - Introduction: 1- The teacher divides the
class in groups of 4 and spins a wheel with the names of different countries
in it. 2-
The students will be given a worksheet with
questions from the food of their countries and they will have to research the
answers in class. They have 15 minutes to find and elaborate the answers of 5
questions. Then we correct the worksheets together. 3- The teacher will bring pictures (and samples if possible) of one meal from each country and they will have to match the countries with the correct food
Homework: After the first session, each student is in charge of finding delicious dishes from the country that they were given. One student will find a starter, another a main dish, another one dessert and the final one will find a tradition from that country related to food. They must share it all on Google Docs, so they can all see everybody’s work. They must download the document and bring it to the next session. |
Session 2 – ICT Room: 1- Students are given the task of using Canva,
Genially or an app they are familiar with to create a very visual menu with
pictures and prices, as well as a summary of a food-related tradition of the
country. They have the challenge of doing all of this in 25 minutes. Bear in
mind that they will already bring the information from home. After said 25
minutes, they will have to e-mail their menu to the teacher. 2-
The teacher will download the menus and
he/she will show them, without revealing which menu belongs to which group.
Next there will be a vote. Each group will write the name of the country they
are voting for and a justification. They must vote for the best menu in terms
of: visual effect, English expression and deliciousness. The teacher will
collect them and a random student will read the vote until we find out who
the winners are. 3- Homework:
For the next session, students will have to think of an afternoon savory or
sweet snack inspired by one of the countries that first appeared in the
wheel. Each student will bring one ingredient that must have cost a maximum
of 1€ and they are allowed to bring utensils from home. They will prepare
that and bring it to class. |
Session 3 – Cooking day.
6-
Students will put their ingredients at the
front of the class, on some tables that the teacher has prepared with a
tablecloth. What they didn’t know is that each group can select 4
ingredients, which do not necessarily have to be the ones they had originally
brought. The first group to pick will be the ones that had won the menu
competition, the second ones will be the second winners and so on. In case of
a draw, there could be a blind-folded competition in which one student is
blindfolded and another member of his/her team gives the instructions to grab
an ingredient. Also, the teacher will give each team a card that will make
their task a tiny bit harder. 7-
All the teams will have 15
minutes to prepare their delicious, beautifully looking snack. They will also
have to write a name for their creation and explain how it is related to a
country from the wheel. 8- After
choosing the winners and putting everything away, there will be a Kahoot with
the vocabulary seen in class. |
VOCABULARY (if specific vocabulary is
needed for the activity):
Students will learn
vocabulary related to food, specifically related to the food they bring to
class and use in their menus. Also, they
will learn general words such as starter, main dish, savory, utensils…
They will also recap
countries and nationalities. We will pay attention to how they write them,
specially if they use capital letters or not, as it is a common mistake.
