EATING OUT AROUND THE WORLD

Shared by Nuria García:

SCHOOL YEAR: 3rd Year ESO

TOPIC: LANGUAGE RELATED TO FOOD

Estimated TIME/SESSIONS: 5

LESSON OBJECTIVE: To learn vocabulary related to food to use in a real situation

CONTENTS/SKILLS: all skills will be dealt with

DESCRIPTION:

1st session: Warming up   Students will make a cook hat to enter the topic and also an apron. Then we will talk about the utensils we can find in a kitchen…The objects will be spread around the class and they will have to say a name for each. Afterwards, it’s checked aloud and they can explain to each other what the utensil is used for, too.

2nd session: Put all your senses to work The activity about the food items and the five senses is great to use it in class. So we can do it in a more humble way. If British products are possible, that would be wonderful; if not, some veggies they don’t know about, some items whose smell is very strong or specific and so on…I would like to try this with my students.

3rd session: Reading about nutrition Students are given a text about nutrition and healthy habits. Then they have to look for synonyms and answer some questions about it. At the end of this session they will have to elaborate a healthy menu for one day (breakfast, mid-morning snack, lunch, tea and dinner).

4th session: Watching a video about different ways of eating in different English-speaking countries

Then they analise how different we eat in Spain from the countries in the video. We can make a debate about their discoveries in the last 15 minutes of the class.

5th session: Role play for a restaurant   Students will dine out in groups of four, so they have to organize the kind of dialogue they will have in the real situation. One of the students will be the waiter and the other three will be the customers. They are given different cards with different aspects they need to take into account (one is allergic to lactose, another to egg, one is a vegan…). They have got 20 minutes to prepare the situation and then they play it aloud.

RECIPE/s:

HOW TO MAKE PAVLOVA, THE TYPICAL AUSSIE DESSERT

The original recipe is given in disorder to groups through pictures so that they have to describe the steps to follow according to the pictures. At the end, when they’ve finished, a video about the real elaboration can be shown. It’s not difficult to make but an oven is needed so not feasible to cook at our school.

 VOCABULARY:

Lots of vocabulary items will be explained and seen in class. New words but also a revision of items they have already seen in previous years.

MATERIALS:

  • Tools from the kitchen
  • Items of food that students can define and learn
  • Projector and computer for videos
  • Cards for the role play activity

NOTES/ PIECES OF ADVICE:

Not with all classes could this unit be implemented. In some groups there are too many students and their behaviour is not appropriate for this kind of teaching.
